Blogging Mommy: C is for Creativity

by e on June 16, 2010

This post is third in a series of blogging tips. A was for Audience, B was for Building your brand.

C… oh C, how I have been wanting to write about you for so long… I just couldn’t think of ways to do you justice.

Being creative… finding creative things to write about… taking something ordinary and making it extraordinary… these are the things that make your blog come alive.

I always shake my head when someone says they aren’t creative. We are all creative. Some people put it out there better than others.

Mama Kat is really good at doing it. And, this particular post is a great example of how she takes  something so simple and something that’s been blogged about before… and made it huge.

So how can you do it too?

Give your content legs on your blog

Let’s take an example of how you can take an idea, and make it bigger than life just by looking at it from a different perspective and using tools available to you.

A few weeks ago, I told the story about how I got an unexpected Brazilian wax. { It happens…} I then got to thinking, how can I give this post some legs and have some fun with it.

I decided I was going to blog about how I think my OB/GYN should offer waxing services. Kind of like a one-stop shopping. I then thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if I got my OB to come on my blog and actually talk about if my idea would work or not?”

She agreed.

So, I took one idea… and got three, very different posts about it.

Be inspired

The cool thing about inspiration is that you can find it everywhere. Every person you meet, situation you encounter and place you go has potential for a great post.

Sit in a coffee shop and listen {This is where I am right now… and there is some pretty interesting stuff going on}. Take your kids to school and make up stories about the other moms. Go shopping and discuss the evolution of the Gladiator shoe and why the style is so hideous.

Take photos. Take videos. Gather content now, decide what to do with it later.

Look around and you’ll find inspiration. Promise.

Look, I am not going to sit here and tell you I come up with amazing content every day. There are other bloggers who do the creative thing really well. But I am just saying to remember how to be Creative when you blog.

If you want some other cool tips and tricks, I highly recommend you check out 31 Days to Build a Better Blog. Very cool stuff to get the creative juices going!

There are also a lot of creative memes out there… I love Mama Kat’s Writing Workshop, Buried with Children has a great one dedicated to stuff your kids make, and, of course, Wordful Wednesdays over at Seven Clown Circus are always fun.

I couldn’t agree more that we’re *all* creative. Of course, some come by way of it naturally, some through training and some ignore their creativity all together.

It’s a shame to ignore it.

Remember even Congo the chimpanzee was considered creative.

I love your tips here! I just started my blog about a month ago, and I’ve wondered how you keep the creativity going after a few months, years, etc. of blogging. Love the idea of making stories up about other mothers…now that’s something I could jump on board with :-)
