This is fourth in a series of blogging tips. A was for Audience, B was for Building your brand, and C was for Creativity.
When I think about blog design, one word comes to mind: Clean.
When I first began blogging, I picked whatever template I liked the best from Blogger. I didn’t do anything to hack the code and make it look exactly the way I wanted it. I just went with the design that was easiest to read and looked the cleanest.
What do I mean by clean? A lot of white space, crisp colors, and design elements that had a modern feel to them.
Then I began to explore free templates I could download. To me, most of them look cluttered. I am not a shabby chic kind of person, and I was discouraged by the amount of templates that didn’t match my own personality.
Where were the fabulous shoes, sunglasses and lip gloss? Because that is what I want to look like on line.
That’s when I began to explore hiring a real designer to get me some real looks I could call my own.
I don’t care if you make money with your blog, or if you just blog to tell family what’s going on in your life… your blog can be seen by everyone. Prospective employers, PR pros who want to use your talent to spread the message about their product.
In other words, it pays to look professional. And, since you are a writer – not a designer (though some of you are- bonus!) it is probably in your best interest to hire a designer to do the work for you.
How I did it….
First, I looked at the blogs I read. Why did I like their designs? What did I like about them? What did I not want to call my own?
Then, I looked to see who they were using to design their blogs. I checked out their portfolios and found someone who shared my style.
Finally, I asked around. Why did this blogger like working with this designer? What was she like to work with? What kind of revisions did she make? What she fast? Was she thorough? Was she creative?? Could she interpret your ideas and thoughts and refine them to make them better than you imagined?
Shauna designed Mommy’s Still Fabulous for me. If you check out her portfolio, you’ll see she designs some of the blogs you might already be reading.
A good designer is worth the money. She does one thing for a living: Design. And chances are, she does it very well.
Sure, you could figure out the CSS and HTML code to hack into your blog’s template to make it your own, but I didn’t have time for all that. I wanted something that looked professional, done well, and done fast.
Even if you don’t want to hire a designer, I encourage you to take a look back at your own blog design and take stock of what you could be doing better.
- Is it easy to read?
- Is it cluttered?
- Is there a good balance between content and things on your sidebar?
- What is the latest study about usability on the web?
- What could you be doing better?
So tell me, what are your experiences with design? Did you design your own blog? Could your blog use a makeover? What designers have you used, or would you recommend?

I used a designer. I have no idea how to do anything with code.
I used Shannon from EightCrazy designs. She is awesome.
@Jen, I LOVE your latest design.
I would LOVE to use a designer so that my blog looks great….but at the same time, I like playing with the code
I’ve also debated joining wordpress like you and some other bloggers…what made you decide to switch over? And, how easy is it to play with the design of your blog in wordpress?
@Katy, I am not even going to try and mess with the code on my blog. Not that I doubt my abilities… well, I DO doubt my abilities… but I just want things to work the way they are supposed to without me dabbling here and there.
If you have the time to teach it to yourself, I am sure you can do it though.
I was on blogger for a while… then wordpress.com… I transitioned to wordpress.org at the beginning of the year, when I got more serious about this blog.
I am afraid of coding and want absolutely nothing to do with it. Designers can have that job!

@blueviolet, I hear you!
It’s funny because the look of my blog has been a sore spot for me. So much so that i actually did a post about my trials and tribulations:

Anyway, I do believe my current design is clean and easy to read, but in being so, it’s quite Plain Jane instead of Saucy Me!
I do plan to have a designer do a custom design for me in the near future. Just today via the featured blogger at http://www.sitsgirls.com I checked out someone’s designs and I think the price might just be right!
@SaucyB, I just might say “Saucy!!” the rest of the day!
I think Plain is better… less is more. Let the content be your bling.
I am loving this Bloggy ABC idea! Always fun to read your posts. You are most definitely still fabulous!!

I used to play around w/ my design so much. Hacking into the html and everything. Making it all cute for christmas, etc. Then I got lazy and forgot and was totally Out of Season! I now have a blogger template, because seriously, I don’t have ads and employers don’t read (that i know of). So it’s just an expression of me.
Great tips!

I totally agree! I tried to figure out all the html code crap, and spent WAY to long doing so. I was so frustrated and overwhelmed with it all. So, I gave up and just hired a designer. Wish I would have done it from the very beginning!!! So worth the money.
I’m lovin your blog, first time here, and now a follower.

So I was reading “G is for Google” and wondering how I missed out on your series. This one was posted while I was out of town, so I’m just now getting to it.
I do blog designs for small businesses in addition to my freelance editing and copywriting, but not often. I’ll do a website when it’s for someone I know who has a business and really can’t afford a pro web designer, but needs a professional look. I call myself a web and graphics hacker, not a designer. My niche market has been small businesses and organizations who need a pro look but can’t pay the pro price. I agree with you…it is essential that you have a strong web presence, and that your presence isn’t something that looks like a pre-made template or anything.
Which is why it drove me crazy that I couldn’t design my own blog to look the way I wanted to for a long, long time. I could do other people’s sites to look professional, but my own…and with “professional” in the title yet…I just had a mental block. Just when I got my Blogger blog to look the way I wanted it to, I migrated to WordPress…and had to figure out how to design that one. Every once in a while I thought I should just hire someone to do it for me, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it…if I could do it for someone else, then, by golly, I should be able to do it for me.
I like my look now, but it took me until I got sick and have had to spend some time recuperating that I had the time to “fix” it. It’s not hard, but the time it takes to learn it all is a bit much when you have other responsibilities.
