I have seen people have beer at the first birthday party because it's mostly for the adults. Ours was just family because at 1, my kids didn't have any friends (OK, they still don't at 6 and 3, but I come out looking bad in that story, so I will not share). And I love the emailing invites idea! We called people to invite, but then had to call back a few times to remind them. Have fun!
