Don’t forget: Your baby’s birthday!

by e on March 10, 2010

I’ve never been good at people’s birthdays. I can’t even blame it on Mommy-hood. I’ve never been good at birthdays. In my mind, that’s why Facebook was created. To remind people like me that it’s someone’s birthday.

But, oh, Toys R Us… You know me well. Why? Because you sent me a BIRTHDAY REMINDER… for my DAUGHTER.

Toys R Us Birthday Club, Geoffery, Giraffe

And, shamefully, I needed it.

In fact, I am convinced they under the guise of “Marketing” and “Coupon giveaway” they sent this to me to really say, “It’s her first. Make sure you don’t mess this up big time.”

In my head, I have 6 more months to plan, prepare and envision the *perfect* party. According to Geoffery the Giraffe, I should have ordered invitations two weeks ago.

How could this slip my mind? How could I not be counting down the days on my iPhone? Why is it that sometimes, I need to think… is her birthday on the 22 or the 23rd?

Babe, I’m sorry. But I plan on making it up to you.

How? Still not sure.

  • Do I need a theme?
  • Do we need a cake?
  • Do I need activities for the kids that will be there?
  • Do I need decorations?
  • Do I need to invite… everyone?

If I were planning a party, there would be booze, beer pong and karaoke… but I’m just not sure that’s what my daughter is into these days. You know how fast kids like one thing before they’re on to the next.

So… advise, advise. What should I do? What’s the “cool theme” to go with? Can we avoid the creepy clown all together?

I need help because, something tells me no one forgot my first when I celebrated it 32 years ago…

Yes. theme, decorations, cake, activities, booze, beerpong and bar food. ALL of the above.

Do what you want. The 1st birthday party is for the parents, not the kid! She will never remember…and if we drink enough, we may not either.

@Christine, Thank God for that!

I second that. Your little one will remember only the pictures you show her. This is definitely a party for the parents. Get one small cake for her to devour. That’s pictureworthy. Then get whatever you want for the rest of the crowd. I was going through my insanity phase so I barely planned but I did go with a cute big theme. I make bug cakes and did my own design for the invites and then EMAILED them. I’m cheap like that.

@Fadra Nally, Great advice… about the e-mailing thing. And the bug theme would totally work as I associate everything “Bee” with the babes.

The B-day party might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, the event that send my head spinning off, the…okay, I’ll spare you the tired sayings. Suffice it to say, it’s blowing my mind.

@amber, You paint a scary picture, Amber… I’m scared. Hold me.

Invite who you want, have it when you want, and get a cute little cake for the princess of honor. I have seen people have beer at the first birthday party because it’s mostly for the adults. Ours was just family because at 1, my kids didn’t have any friends (OK, they still don’t at 6 and 3, but I come out looking bad in that story, so I will not share).

And I love the emailing invites idea! We called people to invite, but then had to call back a few times to remind them.

Have fun!

@Amy, I guess the party is mostly for adults… Really, isn’t is a celebration of not going completely insane?
