Waaay back – a long time ago- in my former life, I was a television producer. Yes, I went to school for it, and yes, I was one of the lucky ones to get an awesome job – at QVC – fresh out of college. Perks? Yeah. A nice employee discount, a casual dress code and, of course, the chance to catch a few glimpses of B-list celebrities that came to sell! sell! sell!
I’ve been to Joan Rivers’ apartment overlooking Central Park in Manhattan. I’ve Tae Bo’ed with Billy Blanks in QVC studios. And I once managed to see from afar Eric Neis, of 90′s MTV fame.
But one of the best celebrity-meetings I had was with Mr. T. I decided it would be a good idea to mention this video Mr. T. did in the 80′s with a then-unknown Martika and other cast members from Kids Incorporated. Impressed I knew the song, he rapped with me before signing a ceramic bust – of himself – a co-worker kept on her desk.
When I switched careers to health care, I didn’t think I would get such perks like meeting celebrities.
But I was wrong. Last year, I (newly-pregnant and from the looks of this photo- beaming, but about to throw up) got her picture taken with Geena Davis:
*It took an enormous amount of self-control to not ask her to say “Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!”
This year, not only did I get to meet the effervescent and beautiful Goldie Hawn, I was invited to write the cover story for SJ Magazine about her.
Don’t we look like old pals in this photo?
*It took an enormous amount of self-control to not ask her about Kurt Russell.
It’s always fun to rap with meet celebrities, but how cool is it when you get to do it as part of your job?
Sure, it’s kind of hard not to get giddy when Donovan McNabb walks right in front of you, or you are doing an interview with Gloria Steinem (one day, I’ll scan in that article and photos) but I’m a pro….who is still easily star struck.
